Postcards for Education Project!

It makes me sad to say that most of the students who come into the school I teach at can’t place the continents on a map. Most of them think Africa is Europe and Europe is Asia and just completely forget that Africa is a continent.

I know, it hurts me too

I have already bought the school a small globe in the hope that the kids play with it and learn a little bit, but their utter disinterest in knowing about the world is difficult to surpass.

I was feeling a little disheartened until I read this article on how a teacher is asking people from all over the world to send postcards to her kids as a way to teach them geography. Clearly, she’s a genius! And I wanna copy her.

I’m going to buy a giant atlas and ask all of you who believe in the importance of education to send me a postcard from anywhere in the world with something that catches the kid’s* attention: facts, jokes, a poem, whatever! Then I’m gonna ask them to locate the place on the map, and finally we’ll pin the card on the atlas.

I’m really excited about this project, and we’ll be featuring all postcards on our FB and twitter pages for the world to see. This is an awesome way to get kids to care about the world and develop a more conscious, global mindset.

If you believe in education and wanna support this please send a postcard (in any language! We’ll google translate!) addressed to:

Los estudiantes de octavo y noveno (In Spanish so the school knows it’s not a mistake)
Carrera 14 #116-36
Bogotá
Colombia
11001000

It would be awesome to establish penpal relationships but sending letters from Colombia is extremely expensive (around $40 for a letter). However, please feel free to include any personal information if youd like us to be able to reach you. Anonimity is also respected and welcome.

Thanks to everyone in advance, let’s kick ass together!!!

*My social studies students are from 13-17, so while they’re not technically kids, I refer to them like that with love.
