I know nobody asked me but that’s never stopped me before. So let me tell you my honest opinion about the city-state of Monaco.
The short version? It’s soulless.
There, I said it. It’s not just that it is an entire country dedicated to hedonistic self-indulgence, meeting the needs of the world’s most ridiculously rich people, only has one public beach, and is tax haven for people who should be paying more taxes than anyone….ok, I take it back, those are pretty good reasons.
Even if you’re not against all the aforementioned things I just think that a country that serves as the playground for people with a lot of money doesn’t have that much to offer in terms of soulful-ness. I went there completely unprejudiced, even curious to see what the fuss is about, but to be honest I can’t say that the sight of a casino made my heart skip a beat.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s actually really beautiful
and I had a lot of fun there, especially at the castle on the hill. But I just feel like underneath all that beauty, there’s not really a whole lot. And all that beauty can also be found 20 min away in Nice and other coastal French towns (though to be honest, the bus ride from Nice to Monaco is so beautiful it makes everything worth it).
My advice? Go there because you should never close yourself to exploring a place. I’m just saying I wouldn’t really go again.
But if you go, check out the Japanese Gardens
Have you ever been to Monaco? What did you think?
